ADULTS
ESD-in-the-Community Residencies
ESD-in-the-Community Residencies provide a wonderful opportunity for adults to experience the creativity and movement of contemporary dance. By engaging directly with adults, the residency programs give them the chance to be active, explore their creativity, and build confidence. These residencies offer a unique way for adults to express themselves and create something meaningful through dance, often inspired by their surroundings, like landscapes, the environment, or even abstract concepts such as the universe and planets.

The courses, which typically run for 6-8 weeks, cater to the individual needs of each school, college, community groups and can be scheduled during the day or evenings. Through this program, adults not only learn new skills but also have the chance to perform in front of their families (or in digital form / film), helping them develop their self-esteem and social bonds.

The testimonial from Cat Catizone, Engagement Coordinator Northumbria University, emphasises the transformative impact these residencies can have on adults, particularly those who might initially be shy, lacking in confidence, or associate themselves with mental health. By the end of the program, adults were able to take pride in their accomplishments and see themselves as dancers, which speaks volumes about the program's positive influence.

"ESD projects prove to be a wonderfully beneficial course. Their course has seen a real range of students taking part, some were returning students from previous courses with ESD and some were trying it for the first time. As a team, we have seen such a positive change in our students, whether that's their physical fitness and ability, or their wellbeing and confidence. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and it's been an honour to be a part of it."

These residencies serve as a powerful tool for building self-assurance and teamwork, all while nurturing creativity and physical activity. It's an ideal program for community groups looking to offer their adults a fresh, enriching experience in the arts.
ESD Community Dance Works
Eliot Smith Dance (ESD) provides a fantastic yearly opportunity for adults aged 40 and above (though open to anyone) living in the North East to take part in creating new community dance works. This initiative is designed to promote physical activity in a fun, supportive environment, and it offers an excellent opportunity for participants to stay active, boost their confidence, and engage with others in a creative setting.

The workshops are carefully tailored to suit the needs and abilities of the participants, with a focus on inclusivity and enjoyment. Each session typically includes a warm-up class to get everyone moving and comfortable, followed by the learning of simple yet expressive choreography. The workshops culminate in a performance, giving participants the chance to showcase their work and celebrate their achievements.

In addition to being a fulfilling physical activity, these workshops offer the added benefit of working closely with professional dancers from ESD, who provide expert guidance and support. This collaboration fosters a sense of community and camaraderie, helping participants develop both personally and artistically. The chance to meet new people, share experiences, and work towards a shared goal is a highlight of the program, making it a wonderful way to connect with others while exploring contemporary dance.

This initiative is ideal for adults who want to get active, discover a new passion, or simply try something creative in a welcoming and inspiring environment. Whether you’re a beginner or have prior dance experience, the ESD community dance workshops are a great way to stay engaged and experience the joy of movement.
